Spirometry

What is a Lung Function test?
Spirometry is one of the Pulmonary Function Test; so it measures the amount of air you can breathe in and out of your lungs, and how hard and fast you can breathe out. Overall, it measures your lung function.

The test can be used to assist in the diagnosis and ongoing management of respiratory problems.

Are these tests painful?
No, the test is not painful – it just needs you to sit in a chair and put in your best effort to breathe out as hard as you can. Although, it can be tiring as it needs effort to get accurate results.

For patients who requires Ventolin, please bring your 'spacer/puffer' to assess it's impact on your breathing.

Why are these tests done?
Lung function tests are primarily performed to examine how well your lungs are working in order to investigate your symptoms, such as shortness of breath or a cough in order to find a cause.

Who can refer for this testing?
Your GP can refer you for Lung Function testing.

The Lung Function Test takes approximately 30 minutes with Shirein (physiotherapist), the Doctor will then consult you on the next step, depending on the results of the spirometer.
